May 2017 Assembly: Gratification

In May 2017, Sunday Assembly Canberra will tackle a subject that affects all of us on a daily basis. We will discuss Gratification.

Our guest speaker for this event is Gayelene Clews. A former elite athlete, Gayelene achieved the World Number One ranking in the women’s Olympic distance triathlon. Gayelene followed her personal athletic success with a career in sport coaching and sport psychology. She has extensively worked with many elite sporting teams, including Australian Women's Water Polo, Canberra Raiders, Australian Wallabies, and NSW cricket.

With her Sunday Assembly Canberra talk, Gayelene will ask "Is Technology Killing the Sports Gene?" As a sports psychologist, Gayelene has researched how hand-held technology has hijacked our body's dopamine reward pathway.

Touchscreens and video game controllers stimulate our bodies into releasing the 'reward chemical' dopamine. However, when dopamine is stimulated via communications technologies, our bodies miss the associated physical and mental health benefits that we get from sport and exercise.

As the author of the book Wired to Play, Gayelene Clews is a a mental health and fitness advocate. Gayelene Clews will speak to Sunday Assembly Canberra in May 2017 on a timely subject that is relevant both to athletes and everyday Australians.

Sunday Assembly Canberra is a radically-inclusive, non-religious gathering held once per month. Our events are built around our motto: Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More.

As usual, we will curate a whole event around this theme of Gratification, including readings, personal reflection and songs.
