How can we stay connected to the people we share our lives with? How can we help those who slip between the cracks?
At Sunday Assembly Canberra in December 2016, we will focus on the theme of Connection. We have recruited a wonderful speaker to teach us about this important topic.
Megan Gilmour is the Chair and founder of Missing School, a not-for-profit association with the purpose of "keeping seriously sick kids connected".
Across Australia, hundreds of children with serious medical conditions remain at home or in hospital, watching from the sidelines and missing school. Missing School is about helping bridge the educational and social needs of those kids, by working to keep them connected to their schools.
Megan Gilmour has been made a 2016 Churchill Fellow. This Churchill Fellowship will offer Megan the remarkable opportunity in 2017 to travel overseas to Britain, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Canada to investigate ways to maintain school connection for seriously sick children.
This is a very personal journey for Megan, as her own son Darcy missed 18 months of school due to various illnesses and their treatment. At Sunday Assembly Canberra, Megan will discuss her internal drive to succeed in Missing School's mission.
As always, Sunday Assembly Canberra will curate a whole event around this theme of Connection, including readings, personal reflections and songs.
This is our last event for 2016, and we welcome all Canberrans - including those who have not yet attended Sunday Assembly - to join us at this inspirational community event.
See you Sunday 18 December at Majura Hall, Dickson. Please arrive by 2:15 for a 2:30 p.m. start.
Interesting speaker + community + songs + tea & cake = Sunday Assembly Canberra.
If you are coming along to the assembly, we are always very grateful to anyone who can bring a home-baked or store-bought cake to share after the assembly!
